#stuart Grant Stuart Grant, a retired woodcutter and joiner, is renowned for constructing a whimsical, handcrafted cottage in Tomich, near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. Often dubbed the “Hobbit House” due to its enchanting design, this unique dwelling has garnered attention for its rustic charm and the inspiring story behind its creation.  A Labour of Love In 1984, Stuart purchased a dilapidated 200-year-old shoemaker’s cottage for £600. The structure was in a state of ruin, lacking a roof and doors. Initially intended as a temporary residence while renovating a larger house on the property, Stuart found immense satisfaction in restoring the outbuilding and decided to make it his permanent home. Over the years, he meticulously rebuilt the cottage using salvaged materials, crafting features like a curved oak front door, stained glass windows, and stonework from river rocks. Despite suffering from myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) for 46 years, which slowed his progress, Stuart embraced the process, stating, “I just enjoyed doing it so much—I got carried away” .  Living Off the Grid Stuart’s cottage is a testament to sustainable living. He resides almost entirely off-grid, without a mobile phone or internet access, and no longer drives due to his age. His lifestyle emphasizes simplicity and contentment, as he once remarked, “I feel richer than very wealthy people because I’m very contented” .   A Tourist Attraction The unique aesthetic of Stuart’s home, reminiscent of Tolkien’s Middle-earth, has attracted visitors worldwide. Interestingly, Stuart had never seen the “Lord of the Rings” films when he built the house; the resemblance is purely coincidental.
