Sapporo Clock Tower: A Historical Landmark in Hokkaido

The Sapporo Clock Tower, the oldest clock tower in Japan, continues to mark the history of Sapporo. Officially named the "Former Sapporo Agricultural College Drill Hall," it has been cherished as a symbol of Sapporo. Built in 1878 (Meiji 11) as the drill hall for the former Sapporo Agricultural College, the predecessor of Hokkaido University, the structure was proposed by the first vice principal, Dr. Clark. It served as a venue for military training for students and as a central auditorium. In 1881 (Meiji 14), a clock tower was added, featuring a pendulum clock manufactured by the American Howard Company. In 1970, it was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Remarkably, the clock still keeps accurate time and chimes with a clear bell sound every hour. Visitors can enter the clock tower, where panels and models provide detailed insights into its history. At night, the illuminated clock tower offers a stunning view.
