The Miracle in the Lavender Fields - Hill of the Buddha in Hokkaido

A must-visit spot on the way from Jozankei Onsen to New Chitose Airport Located in the Makomanai Takino Cemetery near Sapporo, the Hill of the Buddha in Hokkaido is one of the masterpieces of renowned architect Tadao Ando. This 13.5-meter-tall Buddha statue originally stood isolated within the cemetery grounds. In 2016, Ando redesigned the site, encasing most of the Buddha's body within a concrete dome surrounded by a lavender field, leaving only the solemn Buddha's head visible. Hence, it is called the "Hill of the Buddha." Visitors must walk through a long concrete tunnel to reach the front of the statue, creating a gradual sense of solemnity and sanctity during the journey. In summer, over 40,000 lavender plants bloom around the Buddha hill, forming a stunning purple sea of flowers. In winter, the area transforms into a serene snowy landscape.
