This building, active during the pioneering era, was later converted into a museum in modern times. It recently underwent renovations and reopened in July 2025. The formal red building and the museum inside, both inside and out, have long been beloved. We entered at 8:00 PM, 30 minutes before closing time. However, there was so much to see that we couldn't see everything. That was a shame, and we often found ourselves wishing we could come back again. Its wide porches, windows, and red carpets, reminiscent of a fantasy aristocratic mansion, are prime examples. Simply admiring them is a feast for the eyes. The interior also offers a detailed introduction to the history of the Hokkaido Government Office. Learn how the original building was constructed, how renovations were carried out, and what official duties were performed within. The exhibits, combined with videos and actual objects, offer a wealth of educational opportunities. 2) Characteristics of Hokkaido One exhibition hall showcased Hokkaido's specialties and famous products. This is where we took the longest to see, and why we often couldn't see everything within the time limit. Hakodate's famous buildings, Furano's flowers and melons, Wakkanai's North Breakwater Dome and Cape Soya, and the local specialties of each region, and so much more. If you're planning a long stay in Hokkaido, be sure to visit this place first. It will serve as your landmark. 3) History of Development The maps and videos beautifully recreate the development of Hokkaido and the events that took place there. Rather than focusing solely on one, they combine the two, making it easy to understand and learn. The visuals are also stunning, so don't miss it. 4) History of the Ainu The exhibits on the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, are also comprehensive. They showcase traditional clothing, attire, language, and more.
