Smoking is only allowed in designated areas. * Local language barrier: English usage is often limited. It’s useful to learn basic Japanese greetings or expressions. Still, it seems that most tourist spots nowadays can handle basic English! However, in small towns or local eateries, only Japanese is spoken, so Papago is a must. * Restaurant manners: Don’t leave food uneaten, and avoid sticking chopsticks upright in rice; it’s important to observe dining etiquette. * Escalator etiquette: In most areas, stand on one side (left side in Tokyo, right side in Osaka) and leave the other side open for passing. * No eating on the subway: Avoid eating while moving, and be especially careful with foods that have strong odors.
