It was built by Luang Pho Uttama or Phra Ratcha Udom Mongkhon, a Mon-descent monk who gathered Karen, Mon, and Thai people living in this area to join forces and build it. Wat Wang Wiwekharam was originally a small temple with only a hut, a pavilion, and a hermitage. Later, the temple was moved up a hill to replace the original temple that was submerged in water, and became the beautiful Wat Wang Wiwekharam as we see it today. Wat Wang Wiwekharam has many important places within the temple, such as the pavilion enshrining the remains of Luang Pho Uttama, who passed away on October 18, 2006. His remains are enshrined in a beautiful Mon castle.
