Elizabeth Castle, Jersey

Elizabeth Castle is located on a tidal island in St. Aubin Bay, St. Helier, Jersey, a British Crown dependency. When the tide is low, you can walk directly to the six places, and when the tide is high, boats become the only means of transportation. Construction of the earliest part of the castle, the Upper Wing, including Queen Elizabeth Gate, began in 1594. The work was done by Flemish military engineer Paul Ivy. Because the range of artillery at the time meant that the existing Orgueil Hill Castle on the east coast (Figure 2) was inadequate to defend Jersey, and the capital port of St Helier was vulnerable to attack by ships equipped with artillery. As Governor of the Channel from 1600 to 1603, Lord Raleigh modernized its defenses. This included building a new fort to protect the approaches to St Helier, Isabella Bellissima Fort or Elizabeth Castle. The castle was named after the then King Elizabeth I of England. The castle later became the site of St Helier Abbey, but during the Reformation the king confiscated the monastic buildings and used them for military purposes. During the Seven Years' War in the 18th century, it became a prison for French prisoners of war, including perhaps most famously, Jean-Louis Le Lutte, a Catholic priest of the Society of Foreign Missions in Paris and Lieutenant-Governor of Acadia (today's Acadia in the United States, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick in Canada).
