A colossal architectural marvel

When thinking of Rome, the first thing that comes to mind is the colosseum. The colosseum is without a doubt the most iconic symbol of Rome. It has withstood destruction throughout history, whether natural or man-made. Now, an average of six million tourists visit the colosseum per year to pose, learn, and imagine the history of the colosseum come to life. The colosseum is the largest amphitheater in the world. It boasts 190 by 155 meters, or 620 by 513 feet. While most Roman architecture was influenced by the Greeks, the colosseum was truly unique. It was free standing instead of built into a hill like most amphitheaters from its time. The colosseum was constructed of travertine stones and instead of being held together with mortar, it was held together with iron clamps. The roof also had a retractable canvas overhang to protect viewers from the sun and rain. #trip #travel #rome #culture #italy
