What is Nang Yai? Nang Yai (literally "large shadow") is an ancient form of shadow play that involves elaborately carved puppets made from cowhide. These puppets depict characters from classic Thai literature, most notably the Ramayana (Ramakien in Thai), and are manipulated behind a white screen with a light source to cast dramatic shadows. Each puppet can be over a meter tall and is intricately detailed.
