Blue Springs, NZ

The Blue Springs, located near Putāruru on New Zealand’s North Island, are famous for their incredibly clear, pure water—so pure, in fact, that it supplies around 70% of New Zealand’s bottled water. Fed by the Mamaku Plateau, the water takes up to 100 years to filter through underground aquifers, resulting in a constant year-round temperature of around 11°C and exceptional clarity, with visibility up to 63 meters. The Blue Springs are part of the Te Waihou Walkway, a scenic riverside track that usually stretches about 4.7 km one way. However, since March 2024, a significant portion of the track has been closed due to environmental concerns and erosion. Currently, only about 500 meters of the walkway is accessible from the Leslie Road carpark. Despite the limited access, the short open section still provides a beautiful view of the springs and the iconic turquoise water. Even with the partial closure, the Blue Springs remain an excellent stop for nature lovers and photographers. The surreal clarity and rich blue-green hues of the water are mesmerizing, especially when sunlight hits the surface and highlights the vibrant aquatic plants beneath. Native birds, the peaceful flow of the river, and the surrounding greenery make it a tranquil and refreshing experience. While swimming is prohibited to protect the water quality, visitors can enjoy a peaceful walk along the allowed section and take in the beauty of one of New Zealand’s most pristine freshwater environments. It’s advisable to check the latest access information before visiting, as conditions may change. For those traveling through the Waikato region, the Blue Springs offer a quick but unforgettable detour into one of nature’s purest settings—showing that even a short visit can leave a lasting impression
