World Heritage Site, Gulf of Porto, Corsica, France

The Gulf of Porto is a bay of the Mediterranean Sea, located on the west coast of the French island of Corsica, famous for its striking colors and rugged cliffs. The bay and surrounding coast are part of the Corsica Regional Natural Park. Due to its outstanding scenery, rich bird and marine life, and maquis bush, the bay was listed as a World Natural Heritage Site in 1983, including the huge red rock cliffs on the seaside, the Gulf of Girolata and the Scandola Nature Reserve. Due to its rugged terrain and turbulent history, the Porto Piana area has traditionally been sparsely populated. A series of recurring plagues from the mid-15th to the late 16th century, followed by food shortages and famine from the 16th to the 18th centuries, decimated the region's population. In the second half of the 16th century, Barbary pirates frequently raided the Corsican coast, prompting the construction of a number of coastal defenses in Corsica known collectively as the Genoese towers (top left of Figure 1). In his travelogue Une excursion en Corse, published in 1891, Prince Roland Bonaparte, a descendant of Napoleon, described the area as one of the most beautiful natural sites in Corsica. I can't remember any other bay that has been listed as a World Natural Heritage Site, so you can imagine how beautiful the scenery is.
