Dramatic Mongonisi Cliffs in Paxos

The Mongonissi Cliffs are located on the small islet of Mongonissi, which lies at the southern tip of the larger island of Paxos in Greece. Paxos is part of the Ionian Islands in the Ionian Sea, just south of Corfu. Mongonissi is so close to Paxos that a small, narrow bridge connects the two land masses, making it easy to cross. The water in the channel between them is very shallow. While the western coast of Paxos is famous for its massive, sheer white cliffs that drop straight into the deep blue sea, the area around Mongonissi offers a slightly different view. Mongonissi itself is known for having the only major sandy beach on Paxos. The beach is set in a calm bay, which is often surrounded by lower, green-topped cliffs and hills. These landforms create a sheltered bay and provide a lovely green background for the clear water. The low cliffs and lush green hills of Mongonissi create a peaceful setting. From the coastal paths and the beach, visitors can look out over the sheltered bay and see across the sea to nearby Antipaxos island. The cliffs here are not as tall and rough as those on the west coast, but they frame the turquoise water beautifully. This area is a tranquil place for people to enjoy the sea and the quiet natural surroundings.
