Australia's first prison transformed into a park

#2月好地方2025 Prince Alfred Square has quite a history; it was the site of Australia's first prison in 1797, which was later burned down by prisoners and replaced by a two-storey stone building and the first women's factory. Established in memory of Prince Alfred, the first British monarch to visit Australia in 1867, this palatial park was originally a slum in the Sixties. Today, Prince Alfred Park is a public recreational space bounded by Church Street, Market Street, Victoria Road and Marist Square. As the green space was vacated, its history of crime and punishment quickly faded from people's memory, and the space entered a new phase and became the green park it is today.
