2024 New Taipei City Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in September)
New Taipei City is located at the far north of the main island of Taiwan, full of gorgeous coastline and mountains, and revolves completely around Taipei. The scenery here is enchanting. Yehliu Geopark has vast and undulating headlands with remarkable stone pillars and the mushroom-like boulder resembling the bust of a queen, “Queen’s Head”, is an iconic landmark. Walking around the old cobbled streets of Tamsui, you can try characteristic local snacks as you travel onwards to the most popular attractions of the area, including Tamsui Customs Officers’ Residence and Fort San Domingo. On the road you can also pass the beautiful Tamkang High School where the Jay Chou film, “Secret”, was filmed. In the evening you can enjoy the famous Tanshui sunset, romantic beyond compare. You can also take a train ride on the well-known Pingxi Line, spending the day visiting the little towns along the line and enjoy a leisurely vacation experiencing the authentic way of life in Taiwan.

📍Jiufen Old Street Market, New Taipei City, Taiwan
Taiwan is renowned for its scrumptious local street food. I went to one of the famous street market in Taipei which is Jiufen Old Street Market. It is a small village in the mountains located one hour away drive from Taipei.
There is a lot of delicious local food there. One of local I tried is Peanut Ice Cream Roll as in the last picture. By the looks it might be tempting, and once you are getting a bite, the taste is heavenly tasty, yum! 🤤
You can also try its delicious chicken and sea food crispy snack during your exploration along the street.

Cherishing Jiufen's Past and Present
Rushing to arrive in Jiufen at dusk to witness the dazzling lights of the mountain town. However, upon arrival, you find Jiufen nowhere to be seen, as the usual crowds are absent, shops have long closed, and the lights are out. You lose your reference points and fumble in the dark for direction.
Jiufen is no longer the scene you once loved. Over-commercialization has turned it into a gaudy spectacle, like a simple village girl dressed up flamboyantly.
You chose to visit during the northeast monsoon because you knew from long ago that the rain could wash away its gaudy facade, revealing its weathered yet captivating essence.
Gold gives birth to water; if rain is Jiufen's soul, it also reflects your wandering and unrestrained spirit.
Quietly listening to the sound of wind and rain, watching Jiufen shrouded in mist, you think of Zheng Chouyu's poem: 'I am merely a passerby, not a returning person!'
Xiao Zhai Shan
Jiufen has a new sea view accommodation. Not only do the rooms feature large floor-to-ceiling windows, but you can also enjoy a sunset view while soaking in the bathtub. Additionally, a rich minibar is provided for you to fully enjoy your vacation. The closest you can get to the azure sea of Jiufen's mountain town, the building showcases a Wabi-sabi style with concrete walls and cool-toned special paint.
Xiao Zhai Shan
Address: No. 49, Shuqi Road, Ruifang District, New Taipei City
Qi Tang Old Street
Qi Tang Old Street is actually not far from Jiufen Old Street, located just a bit behind the Gold Museum. From the old site of the Jinguashih Hospital Plaza, you can see the signpost for Qi Tang Old Street. Following the signs along the trail, you can also clearly see the old street's colorful rainbow stairs.
Although Qi Tang Old Street and Jiufen Old Street are both part of the historic mountain towns of Shuijinjiu, some of the houses on the street still retain their unique old Japanese architectural style. There don't seem to be many residents in the old street, and it appears that quite a few have moved away. Even on weekends, wandering through the streets, it's honestly not as bustling and commercially vibrant as Jiufen, nor is it overly noisy. You can easily and leisurely enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere of the mountain town.
If you don't like the excessive crowds of Jiufen, you might choose to visit Qi Tang Old Street first. Following the trail from Qi Tang Old Street, you can head to Teapot Mountain, Shuinandong Site, and it's also close to Quanjitang. If you're tired and want to rest, nearby there's a mountaintop tofu pudding spot and whitebait fish rice noodle soup.
🇹🇼 Flavors of Jiufen: Street Eats Extravaganza 🍡🍨🌿
#travelanywhere
Jiufen, a historic town nestled in the lush hills of northern Taiwan, captivates visitors with its narrow alleys, traditional tea houses, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Once a bustling gold mining hub, Jiufen retains its old-world charm with lantern-lit lanes and retro architecture that evoke a nostalgic atmosphere lantern🏮
One of Jiufen's most beloved culinary treasures is its Taro Balls dessert. These chewy, translucent spheres are made from taro root and sweet potato starch, delicately flavored and often served in a warm ginger syrup or with a sprinkle of crushed peanuts. The texture is both comforting and satisfying, offering a delightful contrast to the bustling streets of Jiufen 🥜
Another favorite treat found in Jiufen is Dorayaki, a Japanese-inspired pancake dessert filled with sweet red bean paste. These fluffy pancakes are often cooked fresh and sandwiched together, creating a delightful combination of soft, slightly sweet pancake layers enveloping a creamy, earthy red bean filling. Dorayaki's popularity in Jiufen underscores the town's diverse culinary influences and its ability to embrace flavors from across Asia 🥞
Together, Jiufen, Taro Balls, and Dorayaki form a trifecta of culinary delights that not only satisfy the palate but also evoke a sense of cultural richness and historical depth in this enchanting Taiwanese town. 🍂

Nourishment Villa - A Haven for Soulful Dining
On my second visit to Nourishment Villa, I was still immensely delighted. The mountain scenery is picturesque, with the four seasons bringing endless changes. This time, the lush bamboo forest was particularly captivating. The restaurant's design is simple and elegant, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The dishes are exquisite and tasty, especially the vegetarian cuisine made from local ingredients, which is both healthy and delicious. The service remains warm and friendly, making guests feel at home. Overall, Nourishment Villa is not just a place to dine, but a sanctuary for the soul, with each visit serving as a spiritual cleanse.

Once the longest railway tunnel, the Caoling Tunnel.
Location: At the border between Gongliao District, New Taipei City, and Toucheng Town, Yilan County
Introduction: The 'Old Caoling Tunnel', with a total length of 2,167 meters, used to connect Fulong to Shicheng. In the early days, the treacherous terrain made travel between Yilan and Taipei extremely difficult, causing great hardship for travelers. During the Japanese colonial period, the construction of the railway was undertaken, with the Caoling Tunnel through the Caoling Mountain Range being the most challenging and dangerous part. The tunnel was completed in February 1924. Later, due to the insufficiency of a single-track operation, a new Caoling Tunnel was constructed in 1986, and the old tunnel was closed and left idle for nearly 20 years. After years of effort by the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Administration, the tunnel was officially opened on August 10, 2008, as Northern Taiwan's first railway tunnel converted into a cycling tunnel. It has also received international recognition with the 'Tomorrow's Tourism Award WTTC' and was named one of Taiwan's top ten classic cycling routes. Visitors can ride bicycles to experience its original appearance; additionally, the administration also provides two hand-pedaled rail bikes at the northern entrance of the tunnel for free rental to visitors with mobility issues, allowing more people to enjoy the tunnel and feel its nostalgic railway charm.
Opening Hours: 8:30-17:30
Admission: Free
Experience: The Caoling Tunnel was once one of the longest railway tunnels in Taiwan. It's rare to have the opportunity to ride a bicycle through such a long tunnel. Moreover, the tunnel crosses Yilan and New Taipei, and it only takes twenty minutes by bicycle to reach another city, which is a special experience.

The beautifully crafted pink lifeguard post paired with the striped American rest area allows you to snap blockbuster photos instantly, whether you're in a swimsuit or a vacation dress!
There's a Fullon Hotel nearby that doesn't require a stay, but when passing by, you can see that there are hot springs

Located on the fourth floor of the Eslite bookstore in Yulon City, the cafe is exclusively for Eslite Black Card members. To enter, you must present your Black Card. Members are gifted ten drinks per month, and they also enjoy discounts on their purchases.
The service at Eslite Cafe is of high quality and attentive. Their signature dish is the award-winning beef noodle soup, which is delicious 😋. However, their pasta and truffle egg sandwiches are also quite good. It all depends on personal preference; everything is tasty.
For desserts, you need to go to the display case at the front to choose, and the selection changes periodically. Also, the mint tea comes highly recommended; it's rich in flavor and can be re-steeped.
Taiwan's Golden Waterfall & Yin Yang Sea
I had a chance to visit the Golden Waterfall and Yin Yang Sea on my way to Jiu Fen. We hired a driver to bring us on a Jiu Fen day trip from Taipei.
Seeing the Golden Waterfall cascade down in shimmering hues was a mesmerizing sight. The golden hue of the water was apparently caused by the presence of minerals and heavy metals. Coupling this with the reflection of the sunlight, that is how it got its distinct golden sheen.
The water then flows downstream and feeds into the sea, where it then creates another phenomenon - Yin Yang Sea. The Yin Yang Sea's contrasting colors of blue and yellow was an interesting display of nature's artistry and is the result of the interaction between the mineral rich waters and seawater.

To me, Hong Kong is a place that offers a unique mix of culture, outdoors, nightlife, food and history! I want to travel to Hong Kong to visit the Soho district, eat a bowl of wanton noodles at Mak's noodles, ride on the vintage 'Ding Dings' that ply Hong Kong island and...so much more!
Yingge Ceramic Museum

Address: No. 200, Wenhua Rd, Yingge District, New Taipei City, Taiwan 239218.
Highlights: The New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum is an amazing place to showcase Taiwan ceramic artists and to educate the public as well as the students in studio art. The samples of different firing methods and various surface decoration techniques are very impressive.
The lower floors hold mainly exhibits about the history of indigenous and Chinese ceramics. The fourth floor shows the special exhibits. All this for the price of TWD$80. The English translations of the exhibit explanations were also very well done.
I want to travel to Hong Kong to experience a glimpse into Hong Kong's cultural diversity.

Highlights: The Li Mei-shu Memorial Gallery is a memorial hall which was established in April 1995 to commemorate the famous Three Gorges painter Li Meishu.
I personally think it is a must-visit attraction when visiting the Three Gorges. Knowing the Plum Tree, you can better understand the humanistic charm of the Three Gorges. With the guided tour, you can have a deeper understanding of the special features and charm of his paintings. Although the space is not large, one can stay there for a long time.

Historical Ceramic Street
#winhkflight
Address: 23941, Taiwan, New Taipei City, Yingge District.
Highlights: The Yingge Historic Ceramics Street is a really nice historical place to explore Taiwan’s pottery history and culture! The entire street is loaded with local pottery shops. You can even do your own pottery with only around 400 Taiwan dollars and they can ship your work overseas as an add-on.
Prices are very reasonable for handmade pottery but it might be a bit difficult for foreigners who can’t read Chinese to communicate with the staff and navigate. The street also has a lot of traditional Taiwanese street food which can’t be easily found in night markets in Taipei city. It is a really nice getaway from Taipei city center as an evening trip for tourists.
I want to travel to Hong Kong to explore the vibrant street markets, where local artisans sell handmade crafts and traditional goods.

Address: Yuanfeng Rd, Sanxia District, New Taipei City, Taiwan 237
Highlights: The Sanxia Yuanshan Scenic Area has a lovely hiking trail. You can enjoy the open scenery quickly without too much effort. However, the space in the boulder area is small.
You can start from the trailhead opposite Aizen Park on Sanxia Old Street and walk up for 30 to 40 minutes to reach the Kite Mountain Bell. There are mostly industrial roads along the way, making it a good hiking place for people of all ages. If you park your car next to the scenic pavilion, it is only 550 meters away from Yuanshan Rock.
I want to travel to Hong Kong to enjoy the panoramic views from Hong Kong's scenic peak.
