Highlights of Yasawa Islands: Sawa-i-Lau Caves

The Sawa-i-Lau Caves, located deep within the Yasawa Islands, are undoubtedly one of the highlights of Yasawa tourism. This iconic cave, featured in the famous movie 'The Blue Lagoon,' is a privilege reserved only for those staying in the Yasawa Islands, as it cannot be visited on a day trip from Fiji's main island. The magnificent limestone caves are divided into two layers. Upon entering through a narrow rock crevice, you'll first encounter a mystical space where sunlight illuminates the water in a stunning blue hue. Sunlight streams through a large hole in the ceiling, offering a glimpse of the surrounding trees. Deeper inside lies a vast cave shrouded in complete darkness. To reach this area, you must swim through a pitch-black underwater tunnel for a few seconds. Though brief, the disorienting lack of direction can be quite intimidating. The inner cave is an expansive space cloaked in absolute darkness, so much so that even light seems to be absorbed. You'll float and explore this vast area in total blackness. Both layers of the cave are deep enough that your feet won't touch the bottom, so be sure to bring fins and snorkeling gear. Outside the caves, you'll find a small souvenir shop. Note that they only accept cash, so if you plan to make a purchase, bring a waterproof wallet to keep your money safe.
