Kōfuku-ji Temple

Kōfuku-ji Temple is the head temple of the Hossō sect located in Nara City, Japan. It is one of the Seven Great Temples of Nanto and boasts a rich history and cultural heritage. 🏛️ Historical Background The origins of Kōfuku-ji date back to the 8th year of Emperor Tenji's reign (669 AD), when Kagami-no-Ōkimi, the wife of Fujiwara no Kamatari, established Yamashina-dera in Yamashina (present-day Kyoto) to pray for her husband's recovery. Following the relocation of the capital to Heijō-kyō, Fujiwara no Fuhito moved Yamashina-dera to its current location in 710 AD and renamed it "Kōfuku-ji." The temple became the clan temple of the Fujiwara family and significantly influenced the development of Buddhism and culture during the Nara period. 🏯 Main Buildings and Attractions • Central Golden Hall (Chūkon-dō): The main hall of Kōfuku-ji, dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha.
