Nara has a "Little Chang'an"

When it comes to the Tang Dynasty style of Nara, Heijokyo is a must-see. Heijokyo was the capital of Japan during the Nara period, until 784 when the capital was moved to Nagaokakyo, west of Nara City. During the 70 years in between, Heijokyo was the capital of Japan, and this period was known as the Nara period. Heijokyo was modeled after the Tang Dynasty capitals of Chang'an and Luoyang, and was known as "Little Chang'an." It is also an important part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara" and is listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site. Standing here, you can imagine the prosperity of Chang'an City during the Tang Dynasty. At the Heijo Palace Site Museum, you can see artifacts from the Nara period. The museum is located next to Suzaku Gate and is free to enter. Excavation work is still ongoing at the Heijokyo site. The most important part of the Heijokyo reconstruction is the Daigokuden (former royal audience hall), which began reconstruction to commemorate the 1,300th anniversary of the founding of Heijokyo. Once the Daigokuden is restored, you must visit Heijokyo again.
