Explore the largest private garden in Nanjing, Yuyuan

Yuyuan, also known as Hu's Garden, is the largest existing private garden in Nanjing, characterized by its tranquil waters and rocks, and rich in wild charm. Located in the west of the southern gate of the old city, it is part of the Confucius Temple-Qinhuai Scenic Belt. Yuyuan's history can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty during the Tongzhi era, when the candidate prefect Hu Enxie resigned and returned to his hometown. He purchased the former site of the Ming Dynasty's Wei Gong West Garden and established Yuyuan on this basis. In 1982, Yuyuan was listed as one of the first batch of cultural relics protection units in Nanjing. In 2010, the School of Architecture at Southeast University began to repair and protect Yuyuan based on the hand-drawn plan of Yuyuan by Mr. Tong Jun. The restored Yuyuan has a very distinctive feature of compatibility between the north and the south, and its natural landscape is naturally formed. The layout is more spacious and atmospheric, yet also intricately exquisite and beautiful. Yuyuan can be said to be the most representative of Nanjing's garden characteristics.
