Wat Phumin is located in Mueang District, Nan Province. Another temple that if you come to Nan and don’t stop by, it’s like you haven’t been to Wat Phumin. It’s a famous temple with murals called Pu Man Ya Man or the world-famous Whispering Love painting, which has become a symbol of Nan. The unique beauty of Wat Phumin is the four-sided ordination hall with Naga stairs in all four directions. Inside, there is a four-sided Buddha statue. No matter which way you climb the stairs, you will see the Buddha’s face on every side. The most outstanding feature is the mural paintings. Wat Phumin underwent a major renovation during the reign of Chao Anantaworaritdet in 1867 (the end of the reign of King Rama IV). The renovation took 7 years. The mural paintings in the Vihara Luang were painted during this period. The murals or “Hub Taem” in Wat Phumin are Buddhist Jataka tales. However, if you consider the details of the way of life of the city people at that time, there are many interesting paintings. The most notable painting is the painting of Pu Man Ya Man, which is a term used to refer to ancient Tai Lue men and women whispering to each other.
