Okinawa | A Love for Red Bean Shaved Ice and Okinawa-Exclusive Collaboration Products

In Japan, "zenzai" typically refers to red bean soup, such as the famous Fushimi couple zenzai from Osaka. However, in Okinawa, "zenzai" means red bean shaved ice. Convenience stores in Okinawa have also embraced the trend of collaboration, teaming up with brands like Fujiya and Wafutei. Out of curiosity, I tried several varieties over a few days and discovered something interesting: Okinawa's "zenzai" doesn't use azuki beans (red beans) but rather uses kintoki beans (large red beans). These beans are simmered with brown sugar and served with shaved ice and shiratama mochi balls, making it the perfect treat to beat the heat in Okinawa. Another collaboration product that can only be found in Okinawa is iced tea. Unlike other parts of Japan where green tea is the preferred choice, Okinawa has a tradition of drinking iced tea (black tea). Many renowned establishments in Okinawa have their own unique recipes. I tried two varieties this time: one from Hanagasa Shokudo, which I loved, and another from Donchan Shokudo, famous for its curry and fried dishes, which also has its own original iced tea. Both are affordable, priced under 200 yen for a large bottle, and have a mildly sweet and refreshing taste. Additionally, "sanpin tea," which is jasmine tea, is another Okinawa specialty that you won't find elsewhere in Japan. On a side note, another rare beverage is Okinawa Cola, which is mostly available in vending machines. If you come across it, give it a try—it tastes quite different from the two major cola brands. While searching for these collaboration products and "zenzai" at the three major convenience stores, I unexpectedly found a Coleman collaboration umbrella that has been sold out in Osaka and Shikoku.
