[Aichi Prefecture] Tour Arimatsu, an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings

Designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in July 2016, Arimatsu's townscape was recognized as a Japan Heritage Site in May 2019. Arimatsu is famous for its tie-dyeing, which first emerged as a souvenir for travelers along the Tokaido Highway. Since then, the town has developed alongside the Arimatsu tie-dyeing tradition. Arimatsu's townscape stretches along a gently curving road stretching approximately 800 meters along the Tokaido Highway, featuring the main houses, gates, and walls of tie-dyeing merchants, as well as storehouses housing festival floats. Today, there are shops and cafes selling young artists and Arimatsu tie-dyeing products, making it a townscape that even those not interested in history can enjoy strolling through. The Arimatsu Float Festival is held every year on the first Sunday of October. Be sure to check it out!
