A Feast for Mountains, Seas, and the Soul: A Travelogue of Ise and Nagoya

Our journey began with a breathtaking seascape in Ise-Shima. Our first stop was the Yokoyama Observatory. The vast expanse of Ago Bay unfolded before us, a breathtaking sight beyond words. Countless emerald islands, like pearls, dotted the calm waters, while pearl-farming rafts shimmered in the sunlight, creating a harmonious and tranquil spectacle known as the Rias Coast. Here, time seemed to slow down, the sea breeze caressed us, and we greedily breathed in the fresh air, etched deeply in our minds the magnificent landscape of the intertwined mountains and sea. After bidding farewell to the breathtaking scenery, a feast for our taste buds awaited. The Ise region's most renowned delicacy is undoubtedly Ise lobster. At lunchtime, an exquisite lobster set meal arrived. The vibrant red shell encased the translucent, plump, and chewy prawns, a visual delight. With one bite, the sweet, fresh taste of the ocean bursts into life. The meat is firm and springy, requiring no over-seasoning to savor its unadulterated flavor. This luxurious delicacy is undoubtedly the most generous gift of this bountiful ocean. Next, we journeyed to Nagoya to visit Atsuta Jingu Shrine, one of Japan's three great shrines. Stepping through the massive wooden torii gate, the bustle of the city seemed instantly detached. Towering ancient trees lined the approach to the shrine, and the air was filled with a solemn and tranquil atmosphere. The shrine's architecture is simple and elegant, exuding a rich history. As we strolled through the shrine, we felt the sacredness and tranquility etched down through millennia, and our souls calmed, finding a moment of peace. To conclude our trip, we enjoyed miso pork cutlet from Yabadon, Nagoya's soul food. A charming sumo wrestler mascot warmly greeted us at the entrance. When the tonkatsu rice, drizzled with a rich, dark red miso sauce, arrived, the aroma filled the air. The golden, crispy pork cutlet, paired with the salty, sweet, and richly flavored bean sauce, was a perfect match. Paired with the refreshing shredded cabbage, each bite was a satisfying delight. From the grandeur of Yokoyama Observatory to the sweetness of Ise lobster; from the solemnity of Atsuta Shrine to the heartwarming warmth of Yabadon, this journey not only offered a glimpse into the beauty of the mountains and sea, but also a profound experience of Japan's culinary culture and history, resulting in unforgettable memories that touched all five senses and enriched the soul.
