Looking left and right, the pilot discovered that there was a large, uninhabited black beach in southern Iceland, so he made up his mind to land the plane safely. Finally, thanks to the pilot’s many years of flying experience and strong mental qualities, he safely “parked” the plane on the black sand beach by belly landing. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident, only the plane was destroyed. The pilot was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for this. So the US Navy left (since it was very expensive to recover the entire aircraft at that time, they only recovered the machinery inside the aircraft), and the wreckage of the DC-3 Wreckage was left in Iceland. solheimasandur plane wreck 📍Address: Because it is private land, the wreckage cannot be reached directly by car. The free opening in the past has caused too much damage to nature. Now the only way to get to the wreckage is to park in a nearby parking lot and then walk or take a shuttle bus.
