Mount Popa National Park: A Sacred Oasis in the Sky

#springitinerary Just a short drive from Bagan, Mount Popa National Park offers a stunning escape into nature, spirituality, and panoramic views. Centered around the extinct volcano Mount Popa, this lush green reserve is more than just a hiking spot — it’s a spiritual heartland, home to Myanmar’s most famous nats (spirit deities) and a hub of biodiversity. ⛰️ Nature Meets Myth Mount Popa rises 1,518 meters above sea level, offering cooler air and sweeping views of the central plains. The area is known as the "Oasis of the Dry Zone," covered in tropical forests and flowering plants. Rich in wildlife, it’s home to over 150 bird species, macaques, butterflies, orchids, and rare medicinal plants. ✨ Popa Taung Kalat – The Spiritual Peak Nearby, the Popa Taung Kalat monastery sits atop a rocky outcrop connected to Mount Popa. Climb 777 steps past playful monkeys to reach the summit, where panoramic views and golden shrines await. The monastery is dedicated to the 37 official nats — revered spirits in Myanmar's traditional belief system. Things to Do Hiking & Nature Walks – Trails wind through lush jungle, offering a chance to spot birds and butterflies. Cultural Exploration – Learn about nat worship and visit the monasteries, shrines, and spirit houses. Photography – Catch the sunrise or sunset from the Popa ridge for breathtaking views. Getting There Distance: About 50 km southeast of Bagan By car: Around 1.5 hours drive from Bagan Best time to visit: November to March for cooler weather and clear skies Travel Tips Wear comfortable shoes — the climb to the monastery can be steep and slippery. Bring water and snacks, especially if hiking deeper into the park. Be mindful of monkeys on the stairway — avoid carrying visible food. A Sacred Breath of Fresh Air Mount Popa National Park is where natural beauty and sacred tradition meet. Whether you're exploring the forest trails or climbing toward a spirit-filled summit, it’s a journey that connects you with both Myanmar’s wild heart and its mystical soul. #MountPopa #PopaNationalPark #MyanmarNature #SpiritualJourney #NatWorship #BaganDayTrip #PopaTaungKalat #TempleInTheSky #HikingMyanmar #SacredMountains

Popa Mountain Resort

we check in for my happy birthday, that day we were the only one at the hotel. The services are great and staff are friendly. The place is magnificent and peaceful. The room is clean and tidy. So far they didn’t disappoint me with the structure but the food was not consistent. We had a free dinner and it was dry and tasteless. I only had a good breakfast when there were many people there. I guess if there was less visitors or customers in the hotel, the food tastes awful. However, I love the peace and quite place and I recommend the forest view area. Popa mountain view rooms are near to the pool and reception area so sometimes it was noisy.#luxuryhotel
