Montreux is a Swiss municipality located on the northeastern shore of Lake Geneva. Due to its mild climate, it has been an important tourist destination since the 19th century, including many Belle Époque palaces and hotels close to the shores of Lake Geneva. Montreux train station is one of the stops on the Simplon Railway connecting Lausanne, Switzerland and Domodossola, Italy, and is a hub for mountain railways. A Late Bronze Age village was discovered at Montreux-Bage, the earliest known human settlement in Montreux. Here the Roman road from Italy across the Simplon Pass forked, and the road to Aventicum, the capital of Roman Switzerland, and the road into Gaul through present-day Besançon, France, diverged. This made it an important settlement in Roman times, and archaeological finds have revealed Roman villas from the 2nd to 4th centuries and cemeteries from the 6th to 7th centuries. The most popular castle among tourists today is Chillon Castle. This location has been a military stronghold since Roman times. The development of the current castle spans three periods: the Savoy period, the Bernese period and the Vaudois period.
