Miyazaki – Where Myth, Coastlines, and Sunshine Meet

#cityplaybook #localguides #familytrip #stunningview Post: Tucked along the southeastern coast of Kyushu, Miyazaki is a sun-drenched blend of tropical beaches, ancient legends, and lush landscapes. Often overlooked by international travelers, it’s one of Japan’s true hidden gems—relaxed, welcoming, and full of quiet surprises. I began my journey at Aoshima Island, a tiny, palm-fringed paradise connected to the mainland by a footbridge. Surrounding it are the dramatic Devil’s Washboard rock formations—neat, natural rows carved by time and tide. Walking the path around the island felt like entering another world, with ocean spray and the scent of pine in the air. Next, I visited Udo Shrine, tucked into a seaside cliffside cave. Said to be connected to Japan’s creation myths, the shrine overlooks crashing waves and sacred rocks where visitors toss clay balls for luck. The red-lacquered architecture, ocean backdrop, and spiritual atmosphere made it one of the most unique shrines I’ve ever visited. Inland, the rolling hills and canyons of Takachiho Gorge left me speechless. I rowed a boat beneath waterfalls and mossy cliffs, surrounded by dense greenery. According to legend, this is where the sun goddess once hid, bringing darkness to the world—a place literally touched by mythology. Miyazaki also surprised me with its food: chicken nanban, mango desserts, and fresh seafood were everywhere—and every bite was delicious. Best Time to Visit: March to May for sunny, pleasant weather; July to September for beach lovers; and late autumn for fewer crowds and golden landscapes. Helpful Tips: Renting a car gives you full freedom—many gems are tucked away in rural areas. Don’t skip local convenience stores—they often carry regional specialties. Visit the Miyazaki Shrine for a peaceful cultural stop close to the city.
