A Hidden Gem in Northeastern China – Mishan

I recently had the chance to visit Mishan, a small but culturally rich city located in the northeastern part of Heilongjiang Province, China. Although not widely known among international travelers, Mishan surprised me with its beautiful natural landscapes, historical significance, and peaceful atmosphere. One of the highlights was Lake Xingkai (also known as Khanka Lake), a vast and serene body of water that borders Russia. The view was breathtaking, especially during sunrise and sunset. The lake area is perfect for relaxing walks, bird-watching, and photography. Mishan also offers a glimpse into the region’s unique blend of Chinese and Russian influences. The local markets, traditional cuisine, and architecture reflect this cultural fusion. I especially enjoyed trying local specialties like dumplings and smoked fish. For history lovers, Mishan has several sites related to the ancient Balhae Kingdom, offering a deeper understanding of the area’s past. The peaceful vibe of the city, combined with its friendly residents, made the experience even more memorable.
