Explore Niah with your kids!

Start your adventure to Niah National Park with a pleasant 90-minute drive from Miri. The roads are good and signages are clear. Cross the river (look out for crocodiles!) by boat and take a walk in the great outdoors towards the cave entrance. It is mostly flat and really easy to walk. Interesting animals (mostly reptiles, snails and bugs) can be observed along the walk way and make for a good squeal or two! The chameleon in the photo above jumped on one of our kids! 🙈 The caves are magnificent! They are also dark! So flashlights are a must. Smell the guano and look out for bats and swiftlets too. If you are lucky, you might observe birds’ nest collectors making the arduous climb up the cave ceiling. Accommodation is available at the park. It’s clean, spacious, and comes with options for air-conditioning or just fan. It gets pretty cool at night. Hot water is a little iffy but it’s all part of the experience! Pack a simple picnic lunch on your journey and you can stop to eat it when you reach the cave entrance. For dinner, you can drive out to Niah town (about 10min away) and you’ll find some restaurants and stalls. Niah is a really wholesome activity for the whole family and children as young as 7 years will find it curious, exciting and most of all, the 8km walk is achievable! My 2023 travel wish is to visit New Zealand’s South Island to see the wildlife and beautiful scenery on hikes. I think that would be a family outing to remember too! #2023travelwish
