The Guardian Spirits of Matsue Castle: A Tranquil Place of Prayer at Matsue Gokoku Shrine

Located within Matsue Castle at the site of the "Upper Residence Ruins," Matsue Gokoku Shrine was established in 1939 (Showa 14) to honor 22,928 spirits from the Izumo and Oki regions who sacrificed their lives for the nation. It is said that this area was personally overseen by the castle's founder, Horio Yoshiharu, during its construction, adding a profound historical significance to the site. In 1965 (Showa 40), Emperor Showa visited the shrine for a ceremonial worship, and since then, the Imperial Family has repeatedly bestowed offerings, highlighting the shrine's esteemed status among Gokoku Shrines nationwide. Today, it serves not only as a place to commemorate the spirits but also as a sacred site for Matsue residents to seek peace and spiritual solace. The shrine accommodates traditional prayers such as first shrine visits, Shichi-Go-San celebrations, warding off misfortune, and family safety. Additionally, it caters to modern needs with prayers for corporate success, martial arts victories, and exam success, known as "Great Victory Prayers."
