Matala Beach - Crete Island, Greece

Matala beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete. Sometimes it is also called "Hippie Beach" due to the fact that in the 60s it was chosen by young people of this subculture. Hippies flew to the island from all over the world and settled right in the ancient caves on the beach. After some time, the locals, led by Bishop Gortinis, drove out most of the visitors, but the name remained. At that time, Matala was visited by such celebrities as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin. The beach has a length of 250 meters, a width of 45 meters. Matala is a sandy beach with a gentle entry into the water. Great for families with small children. Umbrellas and sun loungers are about €2 each.
