Ben Youssef Madrasa – A Masterpiece of Moroccan Architecture Visiting Ben Youssef Madrasa was like stepping back in time to Marrakesh’s golden age of learning. Founded in the 14th century and later expanded by the Saadian dynasty in the 16th century, this historic Islamic school was once the largest in Morocco, housing over 800 students. As I walked through its grand entrance, I was immediately struck by the intricate stucco carvings, zellige tilework, and cedarwood details. The central courtyard, with its marble fountain and geometric patterns, was simply breathtaking—a perfect blend of Moroccan and Andalusian artistry. Exploring the small student dormitories, I imagined what life was like for scholars who studied the Quran, theology, and sciences here centuries ago. Despite its modest rooms, the madrasa’s beauty and spiritual atmosphere made it a truly inspiring place to learn. After being closed for restoration, Ben Youssef Madrasa has reopened, allowing visitors to once again experience its architectural splendor.
