Intramuros is a must-see tourist spot in Manila. It is a walled city built in the 16th century during the Spanish colonial period. As the name suggests, this area is surrounded by a wall, and there are many historical buildings inside. The main one is Fort Santiago. It is the place where Jose Rizal, a hero of the Philippines, was imprisoned, and during World War II it was used as a base for the Japanese military, and many civilians were killed at that time. You can also enter the underground dungeon, which was also used as a water prison at that time. I refrained from taking photos of the underground dungeon because of the indescribable atmosphere, but there is no doubt that it is a very important place to know about the history of the Philippines. As a Japanese person, it is a little uncomfortable, but I am glad that I went because it gave me the opportunity to learn about it. If you don't know anything about it, it may look like a collection of collapsed buildings at first glance, but please study the history beforehand and observe the buildings carefully. Although it is a fortress with a tragic history, it now has beautiful gardens and a museum to convey that history to visitors. Baluarte de San Diego, near the entrance to Intramuros, is another ruin you should see. It may not be as showy as other spots, but the intricate, huge circular ruins and the wide plateau are very impressive. The entrance fee for both is 75 pesos (about 200 yen).
