Guia Church: A Quiet and Sacred Place in Macau

The church was built in 1622 by Portuguese sailors to thank the gods for their protection. It was rebuilt to its current size in 1935. The church adopts Gothic style, with a towering gate tower as the main body. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands on the triangular roof, and on the right is a towering bell tower, which looks solemn and dignified. Walking into the church, the simple hall makes people feel calm instantly. The window grilles decorated with stained glass and the biblical woodcuts on the walls exude a strong religious atmosphere. On the broad platform in front of the church stands a marble statue of the Virgin Mary. She has her hands clasped together and a kind expression, as if she is overlooking the land of Macau. Looking out from here, you can see landmark buildings such as the Macau Tower, the Grand Lisboa Hotel, and the Wynn Hotel. You can also see three cross-sea bridges spanning the bay, which echo the scenery of Zhuhai opposite. The 270° open scenery is intoxicating. The Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto below the church is made of rugged rocks, with an arch in the middle and a statue of the Virgin Mary inside, adding a mysterious atmosphere. There are not many tourists here, so you can take photos as you like without worrying about being disturbed by passers-by. It is a paradise for photography enthusiasts. The Guia Church is not only a religious shrine, but also a great place where you can escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and experience Macau’s unique history, culture and tranquil atmosphere.
