Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel, Macau

Our Lady of Jiu'ao Village is located next to Jiu'ao Village in Coloane, Macau. It was first established in 1885. It consists of the original Jiu'ao Leprosy Hospital, the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows and other ancillary structures. It is the only remaining and last closed leprosy hospital site in Macau💫 Fr. Caetano Nicosia, a Salesian priest from Italy, came to the village to serve leprosy patients in 1963. Therefore, in 1964, the original Jiu'ao Leprosarium was renamed to its current name, which means the help of the Virgin Mary. Our Lady Village is a big family. The inmates call each other brothers and sisters, help each other and build their home together💫 In the 1980s, with the advancement of medicine, leprosy became a curable disease, resulting in a decrease in the number of patients. After recovery, many patients continued to stay in the village until they passed away. In 1992, the Social Welfare Bureau converted the female patient dormitory in the Notre Dame Village into the Jiu Ao Nursing Home to accommodate the recovered elderly, and the Jiu Ao Notre Dame Village ended its medical care mission💫 As no one lived in the village, the buildings were vacant and fell into disrepair until 2013, when the Cultural Affairs Bureau took over the restoration. Later, at the end of 2021, the former leprosy hospital, the former site of the recreation room and the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows were rated as cultural relics💫 📍Address: Coloane Catholic Church, Macau #MacauWeekendTrip #Overseas Travel #Weekend Travel

Our Lady of Sorrows Church

Macau 🇲🇴 Jiuao Village of Our Lady | Unlike the hustle and bustle of the Macau city area, Jiuao Village of Our Lady is like a hidden world, and few tourists know about it. The village is not large in size, but the colors of the buildings here are very distinctive. Coloane Village of Our Lady of Ká-Hó, located on the southeast side of Coloane Island, the southernmost part of Macau, was built in 1885. It consists of five small houses of the leprosarium, a church, and a chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows. The chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows in Ká-Hó is a subsidiary chapel of the leprosarium. To be honest, looking at these distinctive and brightly colored buildings in front of us, who would have thought that this was once the site of a leprosarium.

A very relaxing place. The scenery is beautiful, and if the time is right, you can also visit the lighthouse. There is also a Cafe in Notre Dame Village where you can spend a leisurely afternoon.
