From Liuku to Lushui—Relocation of Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture's Capital

Lushui City is located at the southern end of the Nujiang River Valley. From here, the beautiful G219 National Highway runs north through Fugong and Gongshan to the Yunnan-Tibet border. Since the Han and Tang dynasties, this border region has undergone many changes, from the Tusi domain of Liuku Town in Yongchang Prefecture to Lushui County, and finally to its current status as the capital of Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture. It borders Kachin State in Myanmar through the Pianma Port. The lowest elevation in Lushui is over 700 meters. Summers are hot, while spring and winter temperatures are very pleasant. Years ago, when I first arrived in Nujiang Prefecture, the urban area of Liuku, the then prefectural capital, was squeezed into a narrow strip along the Nujiang River. Today, Lushui City, while still spread along the banks of the Nujiang River, occupies a much wider area than the old city and boasts a large leisure district. Strolling along the river offers pleasant scenery, convenient dining, and accommodation. The Hangrui Expressway branch line leads directly to the city, providing quick access to surrounding cities such as Baoshan and Tengchong.
