A Fortress of Faith: Lisbon Cathedral

The Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa) stands as the heart of the city, perched on a hill in the Alfama district. It is Lisbon's oldest cathedral and a monumental symbol of both religion and history. Built in the early Romanesque style after Lisbon was liberated from Moorish rule in 1147, the cathedral later incorporated Gothic and Baroque elements. Serving as the center of the Portuguese Archdiocese, it has been designated as a National Monument and a cultural heritage site.
