Medieval Fortified Tower in Belem, PORTUGAL 🇵🇹
#timetotravel
I visited the Belem Tower after its opening hours so I was not able to go in an only looked at it from the outside. But nonetheless, I believe it was still worth visiting and taking pictures with it on the outside. It is because what are the odds you will find another historical monument by the port!!
The tower itself is truly beautiful and is a well maintained historical monument.
Definitely worth a visit when you are in Lisbon. There are also loads of cafe and restaurants near by if you want to take a break from exploring.

Belem Beauty
Visit Belem where you can see the ponte 25 de Abril and de Cristo Rei. You can also see the historical monuments such as the Padrao de Descobrimentos and Torre de Belem. To follow this up you can eat the best pastel de Belem at the cafe where they have been making it since 1837.Fun fact: the real name of the tart is pastel de Belem. Only pastries that come out of their ovens can be called pastéis de Belém, otherwise if manufactured by a third party it has to be called pastel de nata. To follow this amazing experience you can even take a boat trip across the channel to see the beauty of Belem .
Where the river meets the ocean 🇵🇹
When in Lisbon, there a few things to do outside or in the outskirts of Lisbon itself - and visiting the Belem tower is one of them.
The Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Lisbon’s most striking monuments and the icon of a country historically moulded by its proximity to the ocean and its maritime discoveries of new worlds.
Discoveries by Portuguese navigators transformed Lisbon into the world’s main trade hub in the 15th and 16th centuries.
To protect the city, King João II conceived a pioneer project to defend Lisbon from enemy ships, a work completed in 1514 and which included the building of the Belém Tower, designed by architect Francisco de Arruda.
The tower’s unique design includes a modern and heavily armed bastion, protruding over the river.
King Manuel I clearly wished the Belém Tower to stand as a lasting symbol of his powerful reign by depicting the royal coat of arms, the armillary sphere and the cross of the Order of Christ.

Lisbon Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jul)
“ By day Lisbon has a naive theatrical quality that enchants and captivates, but by night it is a fairy-tale city, descending over lighted terraces to the sea, like a woman in festive garments going down to meet her dark lover. “
This is the capital of Portugal - Lisbon or Lisboa. This is the place where many years ago many discoverers started their trips to the unknown world. Nowadays the main attractions are the 2 very long bridges, the Belem Tower, the walking streets around the old town and also the trams.

Jerónimos Monastery Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jul)
🏰✨ TIPS for Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon! ✨🏰
#wecreate
The monastery itself is a work of art and definitely worth a visit. Once you arrive you will see two queues. The shorter one is typically for the church (free to visit) and the longer one will be for the monastery (you need to have a ticket).
The monastery hosted the famous signing of the 2007 Treaty of Lisbon which was held in the cloister of the monument.
The Lisbon card states you get fast track however, don’t be fooled, it just means you get the entrance, there isn’t a “fast-track” queue. We suggest you head over there first thing in the morning, the queue can be between 1-2h wait time at midday.

The building is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome, it became the necropolis of the Portuguese royal dynasty of Aviz in the 16th century but was secularized on 28 December 1833.
The church and the monastery, like the nearby Torre de Belém and Padrão dos Descobrimentos, symbolise the Portuguese Age of Discovery and are among the main tourist attractions of Lisbon. In 1983, UNESCO formally designated the Monastery of the Hieronymites and Tower of Belém as a World Heritage Site.

Checkinaway (@checkinawayblog) Mesmerising architecture - Jeronimos
The Jeronimos Monastery is the most impressive symbol of Portugal's power and wealth during the Age of Discovery. King Manuel I built it in 1502 on the site of a hermitage founded by Prince Henry the Navigator, where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in Portugal in prayer before leaving for India. It was built to commemorate Vasco Da Gama's voyage and to give thanks to the Virgin Mary for its success.
Vasco da Gama's tomb was placed inside by the entrance, as was the tomb of poet Luis de Camões, author of the epic The Lusiads in which he glorifies the triumphs of Da Gama and his compatriots. Other great figures in Portuguese history are also entombed here, like King Manuel and King Sebastião, and poets Fernando Pessoa and Alexandre Herculano.
The monastery was populated by monks of the Order of Saint Jerome (Hieronymites), whose spiritual job was to give guidance to sailors and pray for the king's soul. It's one of the great triumphs of European Gothic (UNESCO has classified it a World Heritage monument), with much of the design characterized by elaborate sculptural details and maritime motifs. This style of architecture became known as "Manueline," a style that served to glorify the great "discoveries" of the age.

Jeronimos Monastery was built in 1502 and located in Praca do Imperio 1400-206, Lisboa, and is open from Tuesday to Sunday 1000-1700, close on Monday. Take Tram Line 15 to alight at Mosteiro Jeronimos and you will see the Monastery.
The cloisters are magnificent, with each column differently carved with coils of rope, sea monsters, and other sea motifs, evocative of that time of world exploration at sea.
The church interior is spacious with octagonal piers decorated with reliefs, and outside the garden laid out in 1940 consisting of hedges cut in the shape of various municipal coats of arms of Portugal.
The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most visited sites in Lisbon, and it was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

🇵🇹 LIS to PDL with Azores Airlines
We flew Azores Airlines from Lisbon (LIS) to Ponta Delgada (PDL), the largest city and administrative capital of the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal located in the North Atlantic Ocean. Azores Airlines is part of the SATA Group which connects the Azores archipelago with various destinations in Europe and North America. The flight from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada took around 2.5 hours, covering a distance of approximately 1450 km. Shortly after takeoff, we were served a snack box and a beverage. There was no in-flight entertainment since it was a short-haul flight. The flight was not crowded, so each of us had a row of three seats to ourselves.
