Lausanne, the Olympic capital of Switzerland

Lausanne is located in the famous wine-producing region. It is the capital and largest city of the canton of Vaud in the French-speaking region of Switzerland and the seat of the International Olympic Committee. It is a hilly city located on the shores of Lake Geneva, approximately between the Jura Mountains and the Alps, across the lake from the French town of Evian-les-Bains, which produces Evian mineral water. Lausanne has a population of about 140,000, making it the fourth largest city in Switzerland after Basel, Geneva and Zurich. As of January 2019, the entire metropolitan area had about 420,000 inhabitants, making it one of the fastest growing regions in Switzerland. Lausanne was originally a Celtic and Roman settlement on the lakeshore, and later became a small town at the foot of the Lausanne Cathedral (Figures 1-2), which was built in the 12th century. In the 20th century, Lausanne became a focal point for international sport, home to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and some 55 international sports federations, and hosting the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games.
