Another way to experience Arashiyama – Sagano Sightseeing Train (Sagano Troco Train)

The Sagano Scenic Railway was originally used as a small train railway for transporting freight, but it was no longer used after the opening of the JR San'in Line. It was not until 1990 that a team of 9 people reorganized it and developed it into a tourist railway. This route along the Katsura River Hozu Valley is 7.3 kilometers long and takes about 25 minutes one way. It moves at a bicycle-like pace, allowing passengers to slowly enjoy the beautiful scenery of the valley along the coast. As we passed through the valley, we saw the winding Katsura River, with the water sometimes slow and sometimes fast. Occasionally, a sightseeing boat passed by on the river, creating a picturesque scenery that can only be seen when you take the train. The Sagano sightseeing train itself is also very classical, with hard wooden chairs and plain yellow light bulbs, running on slightly bumpy tracks. It is a bit far away from the comfort of modern life, but you can feel the breeze on your face and listen to the sounds of nature, bringing a very different experience. In addition, the roof of the fifth car of the train is made of glass and has no windows, so you can feel the nature better and see more clearly. As the train passes through a route, the scenery is better on the right side of the train at one moment and on the left side at another, so there is no saying which side is better to sit on. However, it is recommended that you get on the train earlier as there will be fewer people. It is also recommended that you take the JR to Mahori Station first, then walk about 5 minutes to the small train station Kameoka Station to get on the train, get off at Arashiyama Station, and then visit the Saga Arashiyama area without having to go back. There are not many attractions near Kameoka Mahori Station. All cars (including the fifth car) have reserved seats, so during the autumn leaf season, you must make reservations a month in advance to buy tickets.
