1: Yasaka-no-To Pagoda (八坂の塔) • Real name: Hōkan-ji Temple (法観寺) • Features: The old five-story pagoda called “Yasaka-no-To” is a landmark in the heart of Kyoto’s old town, located not far from Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka streets. • Atmosphere: This area is full of old wooden houses, cafes, and kimono rental shops. Tourists often take pictures with the pagoda as a backdrop. • History: Built around the 6th century, this pagoda is a symbol of Buddhism and is one of the few pagodas in Kyoto where you can climb up to see the view (but it is not open all the time). • Recommendations: It is recommended to go in the evening when the light is soft or early in the morning to avoid the crowds. If you wear a kimono, you will get a very retro feel when taking pictures. 2: Kiyomizu-dera Temple (清水寺) • Temple name: Kiyomizu-dera Temple (Kiyomizu-dera) • Features: Beautiful red wooden building and large wooden terrace jutting out from the mountain, overlooking Kyoto • Atmosphere: Very lively, with both Japanese and foreign tourists, especially students on study trips • History: Built in 778, it is a UNESCO World Heritage temple, the name of the temple means “pure water” from the waterfall flowing through Mt. Oto • Interesting highlights: • High wooden terrace (Main Hall) • Otowa Waterfall (drink to pray for health, studies, love) • Jishu Shrine to pray for love • Recommendations: Climb the mountain in the morning for good light and fewer people, or in the evening for soft light. If you go during the autumn foliage season, it will be especially beautiful.
