Praying to the God of Learning: The Allure of Kitano Tenmangu Through the Seasons

Kitano Tenmangu, located in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, is the head shrine of all Tenmangu shrines across Japan, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, renowned as the God of Learning. It is a popular destination not only for students preparing for exams but also for tourists. The magnificent main hall, designated as a National Treasure, showcases the opulent craftsmanship of the Momoyama culture. Scattered throughout the shrine grounds are numerous statues of cows, known as "Nade-ushi" (stroking cows). It is said that stroking these statues can bring intelligence and good health. One of the shrine's charms is its ability to be enjoyed throughout the seasons. Particularly famous are the plum blossoms in early spring. The "Plum Garden," featuring approximately 1,500 plum trees in full bloom, attracts many visitors and is inspired by Michizane's love for plum trees. In autumn, the shrine is also celebrated as a spot for viewing autumn leaves, with the vibrant maple trees adding to the picturesque Kyoto autumn scenery. On the 25th of every month, the "Tenjin Market" is held, bustling with antique goods, Japanese crafts, and food stalls, creating a lively atmosphere reminiscent of a festival.
