Many tourists visit the station. Opened in 1914 as Moji Station, it was renamed Mojiko Station in 1942, and in 1988 it became the first railway station building to be designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. After six years of restoration work, Mojiko Station, restored to its Taisho era appearance, had its grand opening in 2019. The two-story wooden station building is in the Neo-Renaissance style, and is characterized by its symmetrical structure, which is said to represent a "gate."
