HISTORICAL LANDMARK - FORT EMMA

This fort was firstly built in 1851 and was named after the younger sister of Rajah James Brooke. It was mainly built to defend itself from the attacks of Ibans and Melanau people who lived along the river. Originally it was mostly made of bamboos which was located in the middle of the town and was destroyed by the Iban Dayaks. It was later restored to current site, which at the mouth of river Kanowit and replaced by belian wood. The top floor was the residence of the Kanowit District Officer and VIPs, including the Rajah during his brief visit to Kanowit District. There was also a statue of mermaid aside the fort which is now also a landmark of Kanowit town.
