The deity worshipped is Sugihokowake no Mikoto At this shrine, on the left side of the main shrine building, there is a large camphor tree that is over 1000 years old. It is 24 meters tall and very impressive! The large camphor tree, which is also designated as a natural monument, is the sacred tree of Kurimiya Shrine. One of the most famous stories is that when the deity, Sugihokowake no Mikoto, became drunk and was surrounded by wildfire, a flock of small birds soaked their wings in water and put out the fire, protecting Sugihokowake no Mikoto. As a result, parishioners have a custom known as "tori shojin" (bird vegetarianism) where they abstain from eating chicken or eggs or drinking alcohol between December 18th and 23rd. Right next to the torii gate ⛩ in the shrine grounds is a Kawazu cherry blossom 🌸. It's a very vibrant pink!
