Hydrangea Flower Water Basin

At Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, visitors can enjoy hydrangea flower water basins during the rainy season. Flower water basins are decorative arrangements where seasonal flowers are floated in the water of the purification basin (used by worshippers to cleanse their hands and mouths). This tradition began around 2020 as a creative use of the purification basins, which were no longer in use due to the suspension of ladle usage to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It has since become a seasonal event. At Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, the hydrangeas are particularly stunning.
