2024 Kamakura Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
This is where Minamoto no Yoritomo founded the Kamakura shogunate in the late 12th century and began the rule of the samurai. The city later became the center of government in early medieval Japan. Many shrines and temples were built among its ancient government buildings and samurai residences as the city prospered. Kamakura declined after the destruction of the shogunate in the 14th century. During the Edo period, the city was restored as a travel destination, and today it is second only to Kyoto and Nara as a destination for experiencing ancient Japan. Major attractions include the Hase-dera temple, the Hokoku-ji “Bamboo Temple,” and the Kotoku-in temple with its famed Great Buddha of Kamakura.

The Scenic Railway at Kamakura High School Station: A Must-Visit Spot!
Kamakura High School Station is a famous spot near Tokyo, located in Kanagawa Prefecture. The way to get there is by taking the Enoshima Electric Railway! This station gained its fame from the scenes in the anime 'Slam Dunk,' so many people come here to check it out! The railway and the ocean in the background create a beautiful picture. This time, I came here specifically to take some photos of the railway station, the train, and the sunset! The light rail mainly uses yellow and black colors! The sunset is particularly enchanting, with golden light illuminating the entire railway. When the train arrives, it creates a very special feeling in the photos!

A autumn foliage at Engaku-ji, Kamakura
#fallcolors #100waysoftravel
Kamakura has one of the best foliages to be seen, and Engakuji offers one of the best scenery to view the autumn foliages. This temple was established in 1282 by Hojo Tokimune, where Mugaku Sogen was invited to spread Buddhism in Japan in 1279. This temple is also called the temple of Spirit which has survived many turmoils during the tumultous period. During autumn, all leaves transformed colours to red and orange the the view is so breathtaking with the blazing colours at the background. How I wish to visit there again during autumn to witness such a nice scenery.
The glaring foliages at Hasedera, Kamakura
#fallcolors #100waysoftravel
The fall foliages is amazing and stunningly beautiful in Japan, and one of the best place to visit is Kamakura, where the maple leaves in the temples are turning into orange and bright red. One of the best temple to visit is Hasedera, located at Kamakura where the maple leaves are aplenty and the foliages is one of the best in Kamakura. This temple is one of the most important among the relics is that it enshrines one of the two Kannon statues carved out from a sacred tree. Everywhere turns bright red during the peak autumn foliage season, and you can't bear to forgo any places as they looked like a picture everywhere. How I wish to return here again during autumn.
Golden Sunrise at Shichirigahama
Shichirigahama, located in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, is a beach renowned for its stunning ocean views and relaxed atmosphere. The beach stretches for several kilometers with crystal-clear waters, making it a favorite leisure spot for both locals and tourists. Shichirigahama is not only a paradise for surfers but also an excellent location for photography enthusiasts to capture beautiful scenery. Along the coastline, there are numerous cafes and restaurants where visitors can enjoy delicious food while taking in the breathtaking ocean views.
The sunrise at Shichirigahama is truly awe-inspiring. Every morning, the sun slowly rises from the horizon, casting golden rays on the shimmering sea, turning the entire beach into a warm shade of orange-red. This moment of tranquility and beauty allows one to feel the infinite charm of nature. Visitors can wake up early and head to the beach to quietly await the sunrise, savoring the peace and beauty of the moment.
In addition to the sunrise, Shichirigahama offers a special sight: the sunrise over Mount Fuji. On clear days, visitors can see the magnificent silhouette of Mount Fuji from the beach. As the sun rises, the peak of Mount Fuji is bathed in golden light, creating a stunning scene that complements the sunrise over the sea. This breathtaking view is not only a dream for photographers but also an unforgettable memory for every visitor.

A Spontaneous Solo Trip to Tokyo
Buying a ticket the day before and flying the next day
It was rushed yet filled with anticipation. My first flight after the pandemic was to Japan!
I don't speak any Japanese, have never been to Japan, and have never traveled alone before, but I'm about to embark on this journey.
I originally had no interest in Japan, but after my first trip, I fell deeply in love with it.
I especially love cities like Kamakura by the sea, which combine rich cultural history with new tourism culture.
Kamakura's must-visit attraction, the Great Buddha of Kamakura at Hase Kotokuin.
📍Address: 4 Chome-2-28 Hase, Kamakura, Kanagawa 248-0016, Japan
📍Key Points
Since I had the Enoshima-Kamakura Pass, I stopped by Kamakura and got off at Hase Station to visit this place. It's very famous. There's no temple, just the Great Buddha standing alone. The Buddha is big, but there's not much else to see, so honestly, I felt the entrance fee was a bit of a waste. I think Gatbawi in Palgongsan is better. Next time, if I get off here, I'd rather spend more time exploring the neighborhood. It seems prettier and more relaxing.

Kamakura's Top 3 Flower Viewing Spots: Hydrangea Path at Hase-dera Temple
Located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Hase-dera Temple is not only home to Japan's largest wooden statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon, but is also known as the 'Western Pure Land of Kamakura' due to its year-round blooming flowers.
Hase-dera Temple began planting hydrangeas in the early Heisei era, with a history of over 30 years and more than 40 varieties. During the peak season, about 2,500 hydrangea plants bloom simultaneously.
Every June, the hydrangeas mainly bloom along the 'Ajisai Path' on the temple's small hillside. Climbing the hydrangea-lined steps to the high platform offers a panoramic view of Kamakura City and a glimpse of the sea! This makes it a popular spot for tourists during the hydrangea season, so it gets very crowded. The hillside offers a spectacular view of the densely blooming hydrangeas. Due to the large crowds, it's best to start your visit early!
Starting in 2024, you can reserve your visit time on the official website. Reservations typically open a week in advance, so plan ahead to avoid wasting time in line.
Kamakura Daibutsu: Japan's Peaceful Giant
The Kamakura Daibutsu in Kanagawa is one of Japan's iconic landmarks, offering a serene and majestic atmosphere. This giant bronze statue of Buddha, carved in the 13th century, stands at an impressive height of 13.35 meters, leaving visitors in awe. The intricate details and sheer size of the statue evoke a deep sense of historical significance. The surrounding beautiful gardens and scenic views further enhance the joy of visiting. More than just a tourist attraction, the Kamakura Daibutsu provides a profound understanding of Japan's culture and history, offering a place for peaceful contemplation. This site, where one can fully appreciate traditional Japanese beauty, is well worth a visit.
Kamakura: the Symbol of Zen
Serenity is everywhere in the air in Kamakura!
Besides Hasedera Temple (in the other post), Kamakura Great Buddha (Kotoku-in), Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu and Shichirahama Beach are places not to be missed.
It’s recommendable to allocate early morning for the temples for the best view without the crowd (Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu opens as early as 6am and Kotoku-in 8am); and evening for the beach/islands.

Tokyo Suburban Tour – Kamakura and Enoshima Beach Trip
If you're not in a rush to travel or shop in Tokyo, you can choose to explore the suburbs around Tokyo.
Actually, there are many beautiful places around Tokyo, such as Karuizawa, Kawagoe, or Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi, all of which are worth visiting. I can introduce them one by one in the future. This time, I will introduce one of my favorite places—Kamakura and Enoshima.
I took the JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line from Shibuya Station in Tokyo to Kamakura, and the travel time was only an hour and ten minutes. Upon arrival, I went to Komachi Street in Kamakura to stroll and eat. They have standing wagyu sushi, and because it's near the seaside, there are also many sashimi sushi shops and various desserts. There are also many unique shops here that are worth checking out.
Next, we took the Enoden to Enoshima for a visit. On the Enoden train, besides experiencing the charm of the old train, you can also see beautiful sea views along the way. Although Enoshima is a small island, there are many places to visit on the island. We bought a ticket package for the escalator, lighthouse, garden, and cave, which cost only 1,100 yen. We took the escalator up and saw a temple along the way. There happened to be a festival rehearsal that day, which was very special. I didn't expect the lighthouse to be small, but you can see a wider sea view and seaside buildings from Enoshima.
Finally, we walked down the stairs to the cave at the other end of Enoshima. Before entering the cave, you will find many people playing on the rocks by the shore, which is very relaxing. Inside the cave, everyone can take a candle for free to explore, giving a sense of adventure. Of course, in the hot summer, the cave is a great place to cool off, but you have to walk back and forth, climb to the top of the island, and then return, so it's best to find a restaurant to sit down, have a drink, and rest when you come back.
This time, we didn't get off the Enoden midway to explore, so I hope to have the opportunity to go again.
Kamakura, the Mecca of Slam Dunk

Japan is a great place to travel alone.
I especially recommend Kamakura. ❤️
Kamakura is near Tokyo and was the inspiration for the wildly popular Slam Dunk. 🏀
That's why many fans visit here to take certification shots. 📷
Also, the clear sky and sea are healing, so I highly recommend it. ☁️
Hasedera Temple: A Serene Sanctuary for Spiritual Renewal
Hasedera Temple in Japan, nestled in the tranquil locales of Nara or Kamakura, is a historic and culturally rich Buddhist temple. Stepping into Hasedera feels like entering a serene paradise far removed from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The temple grounds are adorned with towering ancient trees and the air is filled with the sound of Buddhist chants, instantly invoking a sense of peace and sanctity.
The most awe-inspiring feature is the 9-meter tall statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon, standing majestically at the temple's center. This statue, with its solemn demeanor and exquisite craftsmanship, showcases the allure of ancient Japanese art. During the annual hydrangea season, the temple is transformed into a picturesque scene with blooming flowers, captivating visitors and making it hard to leave.
Moreover, Hasedera Temple attracts numerous visitors with its unique architectural style and layout. Built along the mountainside, the temple's structure is thoughtfully designed, reflecting the artisans' meticulous care and wisdom. Here, you can experience the harmonious coexistence of nature and culture, offering a profound spiritual renewal and elevation.
Kamakura - Enoden One-Day Trip
Kamakura
~ Kamakurakōkō-Mae ~
On the first day, we took a one-hour JR train from Tokyo to Kamakura City in Kanagawa Prefecture early in the morning. The most famous attraction in Kamakura City is undoubtedly Kamakurakōkō-Mae, the filming location for the anime 'Slam Dunk.' However, the entire coastal Enoden line has many relaxing and comfortable spots. Our first stop was the popular Kamakurakōkō-Mae. The seaside crossing, combined with the passing Enoden train and the backdrop of the popular manga 'Slam Dunk,' makes this spot extremely popular. You've probably seen many reports of hundreds of tourists crowding this small intersection, making it quite dangerous. As the saying goes, 'The early bird catches the worm,' so we arrived before 9 AM to capture a clear shot of the crossing. Honestly, if you plan to arrive after 10 AM, you might as well save your time and skip it, as the sight of the crowd will hardly put you in a good mood. Wait a minute, isn't this supposed to be a relaxing trip? Arriving before 9 AM means we had to leave by 7 AM. So, do I really want to visit the 'Slam Dunk' scene that badly? Well, it's the first day, so we should be full of energy, right?
~ Shichirigahama Beach ~
Since we arrived in Kamakura so early, we couldn't waste this sunny morning. Our next stop was Inamuragasaki Station on the Enoden line, where we planned to walk along the beach. The first sight that greeted us was the clear view of Mount Fuji. With the sun rising from the east, we looked westward from Kamakura, and the sunlight cast a golden hue on Mount Fuji, making the scene incredibly stunning. If you're patient, you can wait for the Enoden train to pass by and capture a shot with both the train and Mount Fuji in the frame. We continued walking westward until we reached Shichirigahama Beach. In front of us was the majestic Mount Fuji, to the left was the sparkling Pacific Ocean, and to the right, the vintage Enoden train. Walking on the beach was absolutely delightful.
~ Enoden ~
After a busy morning of photo ops, we boarded the nostalgic and retro Enoden train, heading towards Enoshima. Besides offering views of Mount Fuji and the 'Slam Dunk' backdrop, most of the Enoden line runs along the coast, providing unbeatable views of the Pacific Ocean from the train, making it a truly refreshing experience. If you plan to use the Enoden multiple times, be sure to get a one-day pass!
~ Enoshima ~
After a busy morning, we needed to replenish our energy. A 10-minute walk from Enoshima Station brought us to Enoshima Benten Bridge. Crossing the bridge, we officially arrived at Enoshima. Known for its seafood, Enoshima is famous for its seafood bowls. If you buy snacks to eat on the street, be wary of seagulls swooping down to steal your food!
~ Komachi-dori Street ~
In the afternoon, we returned to Kamakura City to visit the famous Komachi-dori Street, an outdoor pedestrian shopping street filled with various shops. Due to Kamakura's popularity, the shopping street is bustling with tourists every day, offering a wide variety of snack shops and cafes, making it a delightful surprise.
~ Zeniarai Benten Shrine ~
Our last stop for the day was Zeniarai Benten Shrine, which I call the 'Money Washing Shrine.' Why do I call it that? Because it's a shrine for wealth, where you wash money in the shrine's water, and it's said that the more you wash, the more money you'll make that year. People were washing all kinds of bills in the shrine's water, making it a fun experience. If it really works, even better, as it means more money for travel next year! After visiting the shrine, our day's itinerary came to an end. Since we started early, we headed back to the hotel to rest and prepare for the next day's adventures.
7 Days of Luxury | Neither Kamakura Japan❤️
#japantrip
7 Days of Luxury | Neither Kamakura, Izu, nor Tokyo is a summer wonderland # Kamakura's embroidered ball has opened, so don't miss it for those who are traveling to Japan recently~
You can start with # Izu, take a one-day trip through Kamakura, and then return to # Tokyo Citywalk! Literary seaside, Fuji mountain sea view hot springs, shrine birds living in volcanoes, small trains on the sea, electricity in the Hydrangea River Which one is the summer scenery plane landing, directly connecting to Xiyidou in Chinese (2.5 hours), and the reason for setting up the flight. On the way, we passed by Xiushan Temple for sightseeing. In the afternoon, you can visit hotels and hot springs. In the evening, you can go to Lover's Point, which is a five minute drive away. You can see the setting sun in the background of Fuji Mountain and Junhe Bay. Romantic to the rest of the room, the first day, the scholars discussed that the partners would try to choose to arrive at Haneda Airport before 2 p.m. The morning will wake up naturally. We will take a bus to the island cruise ship of Tang, from Ganguanmen Reef to Yunjian Cape, to Ancheng Cape, to the famous Tang Island. The whole cruise time is the same minute, even if you can play immersive games to play the essence of the scenic spots on the west coast. The next day, when the tour boat returned, we had lunch at a small cafeteria at the dock. Compared to high-end restaurants, the other winning factor for this small cafeteria was freshness and affordability. The window of the small shop was the sea, so you could just grab it and have it on your dining table! Here, I would like to recommend some to my friends to try. That's it. Cherry blossom shrimp from other places are really amazing. In the afternoon, we played on the floating island by the sea and left Jinjinzaki Park to watch the sunset.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo for a day, Kamakura is definitely a good choice. Departing from Tokyo, take the subway to Shinbashi Station, transfer to the JR Yokosuka Line, and go straight to Kamakura.
Or take the subway to Shinjuku Station, transfer to the JR Tokaido Line and go straight to Fujisawa, then take the Enoshima Electric Railway to Kamakura.
Starting from Kamakura Station, head towards Fujisawa:
1. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine and Komachi-dori Street at Kamakura Station

3. Superb coastal scenery and a photo-op with Mount Fuji at Shichirigahama Station

5. Enoshima Shrine, observation deck, and the new Enoshima Aquarium at Enoshima Station
Kamakura's specialty "shirasu-don" (rice topped with whitebait) is one of the must-eat dishes. Whether it's cooked or raw, it has a local flavor, with fresh whitebait on top of the rice, making it delicious and tender.

"The Goddess of the White Robe"
Kamakura has not just one, but two huge two Bhuddist
statues. This white is the "Goddess of Mercy of the
White Robe". It is so huge and white that you can see it
when you're going to the direction of Kamakura and
Fujisawa. You can get off the West exit at Ofuna
Station. The pathway going to the statue is steep, but if
you really want to see the head in full, it is worth the climb.

Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu is a breathtaking site to behold during Sakura blossom season. With over 1,000 sakura trees, the shrine is transformed into a sea of white flowers from late March to early April. The blooming sakura trees serve as a beautiful backdrop to the many traditional buildings and structures in the shrine complex, creating a stunning contrast between the natural beauty of the sakura and the historical architecture of the shrine.
Visitors can enjoy strolling through the various paths and trails within the shrine complex, taking in the incredible sight of the flower petals fluttering down like snowflakes. The raised platform in front of the main hall is especially popular for sakura viewing, as it offers a panoramic view of the shrine and the surrounding area, all of which are covered in beautiful pink cherry petals. In the evening, the cherry blossom trees are lit up with lanterns, creating a magical and romantic atmosphere.
Overall, the Sakura blossom season at Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu is a must-see for anyone visiting Kamakura.

slam dunk train coming
#tokyo
Having watched the anime "Slam Dunk" when we were just children, we were thrilled to be able to witness the rail crossing at Kokomae Station used in the introduction before each episode.
We were a bit surprised that this rail crossing was crowded when we reached. Didn't know that it was so popular and that many fans just wanted to experience this. but It was really surreal when we saw the train go by, with the alarm siren from the signal.
The local train runs every 12 minutes along the coastline, which makes this the perfect spot for railway enthusiasts to train-watch.
