High Mountains and Lakes (Haizi) Jiuzhaigou is famous for its 108 uniquely shaped lakes (locally called "Haizi"). The lake water appears in blue, green, emerald, and other colors due to mineral content and light refraction, and is crystal clear. Five Flower Lake: The lake bottom is intertwined with calcified deposits and algae, forming colorful patterns, known as "the unique wonder of Jiuzhaigou." Long Lake: The highest altitude and largest lake in Jiuzhaigou, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, especially magnificent in autumn and winter. Five Color Pool: Small and exquisite, with distinct color layers, resembling a gem under the sunlight. Waterfall Groups Nuorilang Waterfall: One of China's widest travertine waterfalls, 270 meters wide, with a stunning ice waterfall scene in winter. Pearl Shoal Waterfall: Water cascades down the travertine slope, splashing droplets like pearls. The TV series "Journey to the West" was filmed here. Colorful Forest and Snow Mountains Autumn (September to October) is the golden season in Jiuzhaigou, with forests dyed in layers of red and yellow leaves contrasting beautifully with the clear water. Surrounding snow mountains are snow-covered year-round, such as Zhaizigaga Sacred Mountain, adding a sacred atmosphere to the scenic area. Travertine Landforms The lakes, waterfalls, and shoals in Jiuzhaigou are mostly formed by travertine deposits, a rare geological structure worldwide. Main Scenic Area Divisions Jiuzhaigou is Y-shaped and divided into three valleys: Shuzheng Valley (Main Valley) Shuzheng Lake Group: A terraced lake group with shimmering water. Shuzheng Waterfall: Water flows through the forest, full of wild charm. Spark Lake: The lake surface sparkles like fire under the sun (restored after the 2017 earthquake). Rize Valley (Right Branch) Arrow Bamboo Lake, Panda Lake: The water is azure blue, said to be where pandas drink. Primeval Forest: Hiking to explore alpine ecology. Zechaowa Valley (Left Branch) Long Lake, Five Color Pool: The tranquil beauty of plateau lakes. Recommended Travel Seasons Best time: April to November, with the peak autumn scenery from late September to mid-October. Winter (December to March) has fewer tourists, allowing enjoyment of snow and ice waterfalls, but some areas may be closed. Culture and Customs Tibetan, Qiang, and other ethnic minorities live around Jiuzhaigou. Visitors can experience Tibetan village life (such as Shuzheng Village, Heyue Village), taste butter tea and barley wine, and watch Tibetan song and dance performances. Local traditional customs include mountain circumambulation and praying for blessings, with a strong religious culture. Notes Altitude Sickness: The scenic area is 2000-3100 meters above sea level; avoid strenuous exercise. Environmental Protection: Smoking and littering are prohibited; drones are banned in some areas. Weather: Large temperature differences between day and night; bring windproof jackets and sun protection. Accommodation: There is no lodging inside the scenic area; stay at hotels at the valley entrance (such as Zhangzha Town). Re-entry the next day requires purchasing a new ticket.
