Conquering Hallasan: 10 Hours Across Jeju’s Majestic Peak

#springitinerary #korea #jeju We began our Hallasan hike early in the morning, setting off just after 7 AM. The air was crisp and cool, perfect for what would be a long but rewarding journey. Our route took us up the mountain via the Gwaneumsa Trail, known for its steep climbs, rugged terrain, and breathtaking views. The trail was demanding but incredibly scenic, with dense forests, volcanic rock formations, and the occasional glimpse of Jeju’s sweeping landscape below. Reaching the summit was a moment of pure exhilaration. Standing at the highest point in South Korea, we took in the panoramic views from the crater lake, Baengnokdam, nestled at the top. The wind was sharp but invigorating, and the sense of achievement made every step worth it. For the descent, we took the Seongpanak Trail, which offered a gentler, more gradual path down the mountain. The contrast between the two trails made for a dynamic and balanced hiking experience. Along the way down, we were lucky enough to spot a deer grazing quietly near the trail—a peaceful and magical encounter that added to the day’s wonder. After nearly 10 hours of hiking, we reached the base just before sunset—tired but deeply satisfied. Hallasan challenged us with its elevation and endurance, but it rewarded us tenfold with its natural beauty, serene wildlife, and unforgettable memories. Tips for Future Hikers: • Wear proper hiking shoes—the terrain, especially on Gwaneumsa, can be rough and slippery. • Bring hiking sticks to help with both the steep ascent and the long descent. • Register before starting the hike, and make sure to check the cut-off time to reach the peak (typically in the early afternoon) as the trail closes for safety. Whether you’re chasing views, testing your limits, or just soaking in nature, Hallasan is a hike not to be missed.

How about hiking in Jeju Island?

I visited Jeju in early September, which was still considered summer this year. The weather was quite hot, and it rained frequently, but the scenery more than made up for it—the views were absolutely stunning. I took the shortest trail on Mount Hallasan, enjoyed some amazing Korean BBQ, and was spoiled for choice with the number of cafes offering breathtaking beach views. It was also my first time driving on the right side of the road. While it took some getting used to, navigating around wasn’t too difficult. You just need to be extra cautious at roundabouts (there are many!) and junctions. That said, self-driving is definitely the best way to explore Jeju, as the island is large and its attractions are quite spread out. I’d love to visit Jeju again—perhaps in autumn, when the leaves turn golden brown and the island takes on a whole new charm. #jeju #september #summer #hallasanmountain #jejublackpork #jejucafe ChatGPT can make mistakes.
