Recommended Byzantine Empire Ruins to Visit in Istanbul 1: Hagia Sophia Originally built in 537, this Orthodox cathedral has stood the test of time. After being converted into a mosque during the Ottoman Empire, it later became a museum and has now returned to being a mosque. Inside, you can admire several mosaics from the era. 2: Obelisk of Thutmose III The area now known as Sultanahmet Square was once the Hippodrome during the Byzantine Empire. It features relics such as the Obelisk of Thutmose III brought from Egypt by Theodosius I, the Serpent Column, and the Obelisk of Constantine VII, all of which still exist today. 3: Remains of the Hippodrome's Seating A portion of the Hippodrome's spectator seating can still be found just a short walk downhill from Sultanahmet Square. 4: Hagia Irene The oldest church in Constantinople, Hagia Irene was preserved without being converted into a mosque during the Ottoman Empire and remains intact to this day. 5: Valens Aqueduct Constructed during the Byzantine Empire to transport water into Constantinople, only parts of the aqueduct remain today. Cars now pass beneath its arches. 6: Theodosian Walls These triple-layered walls protected the Byzantine Empire for over 1,000 years. Several gates and defensive towers from the walls are still standing.
