Fishing style in Inle Lake

Standing on the stern of their boats, they wrap one leg around an oar and propel themselves through the water with a rhythmic, circular motion. This frees their hands for fishing or other tasks. Their fishing methods are also well-adapted to the lake's environment. They use various types of nets and traps, including conical traps called "phaung" or "saung," which are submerged in the water to catch fish. Another traditional method, now less common, involves using a large conical net and scaring fish into it. They also cultivate floating gardens on the lake, creating fertile plots for growing vegetables and other crops, which in turn attract fish. This symbiotic relationship between the Intha people and their environment is a testament to their ingenuity and resourcefulness.
